Drought Occurs in East Nusa Tenggara

Crop failure has occurred in 94,603 acres of land in 17 regencies in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) due to the drought caused by erratic rainfall since January 2010.
NTT Food Security and Field Counseling Agency Head Nikolaus Bala Nuhan said in Kupang on Wednesday, April 28 that the data was obtained by the Drought Supervisory Team from 21 regencies/ cities in early April.
The report also says 17 regencies were suffering from severe crop failure.
“The drought hit 1,223 villages and 161 districts in up to 205,655 households or 494,980 people,” Nuhan told tvOne on Thursday, April 29.
The failure occurred in 22,995 acres of rice fields, 59,518 acres of corn fields, 8,135 acres of tuber fields and 3,995 acres of nut fields. Nuhan also said of 17 regencies/cities suffering from the drought, East Sumba was the worst with 19,712 acres of dry lands followed by Belu with 9,854 acres and Rote Ndao with 8,858 acres.
In response to the issue, the member of NTT Regional House of Representatives’ Commission D, Kasintus Prolakmasi Ebu Tho has asked the provincial government to take emergency measures to overcome the food shortage, including rice distribution.
Ebu Tho also said the government should speed up the implementation of long-term development projects that provide job opportunities, which would increase the people’s ability to buy food.
