Mud eruptions from seven locations in East Nusa Tenggara province reported last month have formed a mudlake in the region, similar to the eruption in Sidoarjo, East Java, about two months after residents said the eruption began.

All the seven eruption points, which have grown now into wells, sprawled within approximately five kilometer radius in Sulamu Subdistrict in Kupang regency.

Vulcanologist are taking samples of the mud to its main lab in West Java, for further studies and currently suspected moving cracked soil layers of inflicting the eruptions.

Examiner from the Vulcanology and Geology Mitigation Disaster Agency based in Bandung, Herry Purnomo said today (8/7) in Kupang, “There are possibilities that the mud eruption would form a huge crater, because the point of eruptions are very closed and that there are possibilities for new eruption point(s).”

The eruption points have grown into wells with the largest being found has a diameter of 1.5 meters. Herry suggested regional administration to keep construction projects at distance from the area.
